alethic is an experimental fiction in a hypertext format. The narrative text is atomized into nodes and then dynamically reassembled using computer algorithms. This is a second-generation version of the tools originally developed by gmb for ebbflux.com

Architecture:
PHP (a hypertext preprocessing language) does all the math and heavy-lifting required to define relationships, structures and inference rules for the node display. Raw text is held in MySQL (an open source database). Rich typography on the front page is thanks to sIFR3 (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement). The inspirational font itself is Archer Hairline licensed from H&FJ and embedded contractually as an import-resistant swf.

Theory:
If you choose the right algorithm and you're lucky, a story will grow right out of it.

Dialectics:
This is an ongoing work. The regular addition of nodes and editing of existing text in the library will continually effect the shape and direction of the story.

Timeline:
2008 May - alethic opens with 101 nodes.

"Everything written symbols can say has already passed by. They are like tracks left by animals ... The aim is to reach true by means of those tracks, those letters, those signs -- but reality itself is not a sign, and it leaves no tracks. It doesn't come to us by way of words or letters. We can go toward it, by following those words and letters back to what they came from."
